Pojoaque Valley to host PED summer reading program; district seeks tutors and staff

Pojoaque Valley Public Schools will participate in the statewide summer reading program run by the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED), Superintendent Dr. Chanel Segura told the board on Feb. 11. The four‑week program runs Monday–Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon, and is aimed at K–8 students to bolster literacy during summer months.
Segura said the PED will provide tutor recruitment and training; local tutors must be at least 18, complete a PED background check and will be paid $35 per hour. The district will supplement the PED program by offering transportation using existing summer transportation routes and by staffing local host sites where feasible. Laura Smith was identified as the district’s summer reading coordinator for secondary students and may speak with families or potential local tutors about participation.
Board members asked whether materials and instruction would be available in Spanish; staff said materials and Spanish‑language instruction were limited but PED is working to accommodate Spanish‑speaking students and host sites. The district encouraged staff, instructional aides and community members who meet the PED requirements to consider applying as tutors.
