Developer presents Hakona land‑grant teacher‑housing proposal; board urged to coordinate on funding MOUs

At the Dec. 17 meeting, Danny Martinez presented a multi‑phase housing proposal intended to expand teacher and workforce housing options for Pojoaque Valley. Martinez said the Hakona land‑grant site could accommodate up to 36 multifamily units (fourplexes/duplexes) and about 120 single‑family homes and that Santa Fe County has been supportive in preliminary conversations.

Martinez urged the district to provide guidance on priorities for the housing program to help shape grant applications and MOUs, and he said the project team planned to appear before the Santa Fe County technical advisory committee the morning following the board meeting. "If everything works well, we could see housing in the Hakona Land Grant within the next six months," Martinez told the board.

Board members raised concerns about proposed rents, the affordability assumptions and alternative properties if the Hakona plan did not proceed. One member encouraged consideration of nearby properties (an old hotel parcel discussed as a fallback) and asked Martinez to continue bringing site and financing detail back to the board.

Superintendent Dr. Segura said district staff will coordinate with Martinez and county partners; board members asked for timely information about any required MOUs or action items, and one board member noted any county or state MOUs should be brought to the Jan. 14 meeting if available.

No formal action was taken on Dec. 17; Martinez said he will continue county coordination and return to the board with additional funding and site details.
