Las Clinicas del Norte describes school‑based health services; board approves MOU

Las Clinicas del Norte presented its school‑based primary care, behavioral health and mobile dental services to the board and the board approved a memorandum of understanding to continue and expand services at district sites.
Andrea Sandoval, CEO of Las Clinicas del Norte, told the board that the federally qualified health center currently operates eight community clinics and school‑based health centers that serve students in the district. “We currently operate 8 community health clinics, and of those, 4 of them are school based health centers,” Sandoval said, and added the clinics provide primary care, behavioral health, dental mobile units and Medicaid enrollment assistance.
Sandoval said the organization will provide those services to students at no cost to the district or to parents; the clinics bill insurance and, where necessary, absorb copays and deductibles so families are not billed. She also described a new health‑coordination program for the district; Las Clinicas was selected as one of two New Mexico school‑based providers to participate in that pilot and will place a care coordinator to work directly with families and schools.
Board members thanked the organization and asked about long‑term funding and federal dollars. Sandoval said the clinic’s current federal award allows it to draw down funds this award year but future funding is uncertain. After the presentation the board voted to approve the MOU extending the clinics’ role in district school‑based services.
The board recorded the motion and roll call; the chair announced the motion carried.
