Questa board approves grants, contracts and policies; proposed meeting schedule fails 2–2
Summary
On Oct. 2 the board approved a Village of Questa scope at the high school, several vendor pre-approvals and two LOR Foundation gifts (a $1,900 donation and a $12,300 grant for an accessible stage). A motion to revise the 2024–25 meeting schedule failed on a 2–2 vote; the board approved the AASA conference and amended extracurricular eligibility policy.
The Questa Independent Schools Board voted on multiple items at its Oct. 2 regular meeting, approving facility work, donations, vendor pre-approvals and a revised extracurricular-eligibility policy while narrowly failing to adopt a revised meeting schedule.
Proposed revision to the 2024–2025 monthly meeting schedule failed after a 2–2 roll call vote. President Jason Rael moved to approve the revised schedule; Vice President Jose Lovato and President Rael recorded aye votes while Member Juan Cisneros and Secretary Esequiel Romero recorded no votes, leaving the motion without a majority and therefore defeated.
The board approved the Village of Questa update on the scope of work at the high school; the transcript records Member Cisneros voting in favor and Vice President Lovato seconding the motion.
The LOR Foundation donation for a back-to-school dinner ($1,900) passed unanimously. The board also approved a $12,300 LOR Foundation grant to purchase an accessible stage for school and community events; that grant passed 4–1, with Member Cisneros voting against the stage grant.
The board approved pre-approval requisitions for Pro Sport Equipment and a 24-inch stagedrop, and approved travel to the AASA Future Driven Leadership Conference in New Orleans (March 6–8, 2025). The board’s approvals of vendors and conference travel were recorded as passed by board votes during the meeting.
On policy matters, the board completed a first reading of policy J-4350 (JJIB Interscholastic Sports) and scheduled it for a second reading. The board approved the second reading of policy J-4550 (JJJ Extracurricular Activity Eligibility) with an amendment: the policy was approved with an exception changing the eligibility interval from nine weeks to a semester. The J-4550 motion passed 4–1 (Member Michael Cordova voted no).
