Union City Council backs Erie County plan to study affordable housing

Union City Borough Council on Sept. 16 voted unanimously to support Erie County’s effort to develop a new countywide comprehensive housing plan that officials say will focus on improving both quality and affordability.
Councilor Osborn, who moved the resolution, said the county will use MAP grant money and Act 137 (Affordable Housing Act) funds from deed transfers to finance the planning effort. Councilor Steadman seconded the motion and councilors voted to adopt the resolution without dissent.
The council’s action follows multiple borough residents submitting applications for Act 137 funds, which are awarded based on income eligibility, Council members noted during the meeting. The resolution asks Erie County to prepare recommendations that municipalities can use to address local housing shortages and improve affordable housing stock.
The motion carried unanimously; councilors did not set a local follow-up task at the meeting. The borough will be notified if and when county staff circulate draft recommendations or request local data for the plan’s preparation.
