Harwinton historic commission approves solar panels, Powerwall at 21 South Road

The Harwinton Historic District & Historic Properties Commission voted July 14 to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness for roof-mounted solar panels and a Tesla Powerwall at 21 South Road, proposed by Peter and Kathleen Jannuzzi.
A prehearing on June 16 and product materials describing panel size, material and roof-mounting details were provided to Commission members before the special meeting. The Commission read a legal notice that ran in the July 3, 2026, edition of the Republic American; because the panels will be visible from Route 4, the project required a public hearing and registered letters were mailed to the four abutting homeowners, with one receipt returned as of the hearing.
Applicant Peter Jannuzzi told the Commission that the Powerwall must be sited near the home’s electrical service panel and therefore would not face Route 4. "The Powerwall must be located near the electrical box and will not face Route 4," Jannuzzi said, explaining that placement is driven by the location of the service equipment.
Commissioner Bree Gurin moved to approve the application; Secretary Joann Hohensee seconded the motion. Chair Peter Brazaitis called the roll: Brazaitis — yea; Gurin — yea; Hohensee — yea; Lindsay McCook — abstained. The motion carried and the Certificate of Appropriateness will be mailed to Mr. and Mrs. Jannuzzi.
The special meeting opened at 7:02 p.m. and adjourned at 7:10 p.m. The Commission listed its next regular meeting as tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, August 18, 2026. The minutes of the special meeting were signed and transmitted as an administrative record.
