Portal council approves 10% gas rate increase to offset higher tariffs

Councilmember Kenneth Evenson made the motion to approve the increase; Tamara Rudland seconded and the motion carried with all members in favor.
Council discussion noted that residents and businesses will receive two bills in March because of the meter-reading schedule. The council recorded that gas customers will be charged $1.30 per cubic foot for the Feb. 21 to March 5 meter reading and $1.43 per cubic foot for the March 5 to March 21 reading. Auditor Kaydee Smith will reread meters on March 5, the council said.
The council framed the change as necessary to cover higher wholesale or tariff costs; no roll-call vote or dissent was recorded in the minutes. The rate change takes effect with the March meter readings and will appear on bills issued later in March.
