Deltona commission directs manager to pursue conservation purchases, work with Volusia Forever

The Deltona City Commission on July 20 approved Resolution 2026‑61, authorizing the city manager to identify property suitable for conservation, pursue grants and other funding, and work with partner organizations including Volusia Forever. The motion passed unanimously.
Commissioner Nobick described the resolution as the next step in the "Keep Deltona Wild" initiative, pointing to specific target areas such as Deeranch and Collins Road that staff and a consultant had previously identified. Residents and conservation advocates spoke during public comment urging careful planning: David Sosa, a former Volusia Forever board member, asked the city to coordinate with Volusia Forever and other conservancies, noting the expense and management requirements of land acquisition.
Vice Mayor Villavazquez urged the manager to include Volusia Forever in outreach given that organization’s experience. The resolution directs the manager to evaluate properties citywide and to return any proposed acquisitions and funding requests to the commission for final approval.
Next steps: Staff will inventory candidate properties, reach out to partner organizations, and return with recommendations detailing funding sources, deed restrictions and proposed management strategies.
