Girl Scouts propose Blessing Box expansion; Parks Board asks city to fund Scout Hut repairs

Members of the Malden Girl Scouts presented a Take Action project at the July 6 council meeting proposing to refurbish an existing Blessing Box at First Southern Baptist Church and to install a second Blessing Box on the north end of town (near the Fire Station or Scout Hut) to provide free access to essential items for residents and families in need. The council thanked and commended the Scouts for their initiative and community service.
Anita Mathies, representing the Parks Board, addressed the council about the older Scout Hut in Frisco Park, urging repair and preservation instead of demolition. Mathies described the building as having historical and sentimental value as a memorial to scouting in Malden and cited informal prior repair estimates in the range of $50,000 to $80,000. She asked for city assistance to address immediate priorities such as roof repair and mold remediation and suggested the structure could be used as a rentable community space to help offset costs. The council indicated general support for preservation and asked the Parks Board to return with a prioritized cost breakdown and grant-exploration efforts.
No formal funding commitment was made at the meeting; the request will return to the council with additional detail for future consideration.
