A coalition of East Irvington residents urged the Town of Greenberg on Sept. 10 to install sidewalks on Taxter Road, describing repeated close calls and a history of crashes they say make walking unsafe. Cindy Collins (Speaker 12) told the board her family recently witnessed a driver swerve into opposing traffic to avoid striking a parent pushing a stroller and cited police crash data showing 182 crashes on Taxter Road since June 2009, with 43 involving injuries.
Speakers recommended traffic‑calming measures, crosswalks, a reduced speed limit and creation of a sidewalk district so maintenance and liability do not fall wholly on adjacent homeowners. Board members discussed options: the town could assume responsibility and change local law, create a sidewalk district tied to property assessments, or include new sidewalks in bidding plans for spring 2026. The supervisor said the board plans to seek bids, address drainage and snow‑removal policies and aim for construction by summer 2026.
Youth speaker Sebastian Sage described his 201x collision on Taxter Road: he spent two weeks in the hospital, underwent surgery, had titanium screws in his elbow and months of recovery. Sven Clavis and other residents said sidewalks are necessary for children and families to safely reach playgrounds and bus stops.
Board members asked petitioners to provide signatures and documentation so staff can refine scope and cost estimates; the town indicated it would coordinate snow‑removal and liability policy work alongside design and bidding.
