Raton students propose plan to preserve or repurpose century-old school trophies

Jennifer Mattorano, the Student Senate representative at Raton High School, told the Board of Education on Jan. 20 that students have planned Tigerfest events for Jan. 24–25 and proposed changes to the school’s trophy displays.
Margaret Mattorano told the board there are 17 cabinets in the cafeteria containing more than 560 trophies, with the oldest commemorating a 1936 state basketball championship and the most recent from 2022. Student Senate offered several ideas: keep current trophies in locked display cases, auction older trophies, display memorial items in shadow boxes in locker rooms, or return trophies to families.
The students asked the board for guidance on turning the project into a formal effort for the 2025–26 school year. President Jason Phillips thanked the students for the proposal and said the board would consider a plan.
The presentation also included a scheduling note: Student Senate said students will return to class after the Friday assembly during Tigerfest and the bulletin-board decorating event will replace a door-decorating contest.
