Ramah board approves cemetery fence, authorizes equipment purchases and community dumpsters

The Ramah Water and Sanitation District board voted unanimously Aug. 12 to buy materials and install a 320-foot steel fence at the Ramah cemetery, approve funds for equipment to support upcoming roadwork and to fund community cleanup dumpsters.
Board Chairman Robert Montague opened the meeting and the board reviewed a Home Depot materials list and a contractor quote of about $39,000 for fence purchase and installation. Board member Shawna Grassie moved to buy materials and use district labor for installation with a budget of $12,000 to cover panels, fence wire, brackets and cement; Michael Croley seconded and the motion carried unanimously. The board discussed doing the work in-house to lower costs; operator Flint Tietjen said his crew and interns would install the fence when materials arrive.
The board also discussed equipment to support a planned NMDOT road project on South Bloomfield. Members reviewed a used skip loader that is currently in repair; the board authorized the operator to inspect the machine and make an offer up to $24,000 if it is in good working condition. Whitney River-Croley moved the measure; Shawna Grassie seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
On pest control and community cleanup, the operator reported roughly 70 smoke canisters remain from a prior order of 400 and recommended restocking. The board approved ordering additional smoke canisters up to $2,500. The board approved running a Ramah Beautification with two extra dumpsters in August and September with the same pricing and guidelines used previously.
The board considered whether to contract for online mapping of water and sewer lines but decided to continue using and updating the district’s paper maps to save ongoing subscription costs.
The board said they prefer to order fence materials soon to avoid price increases and store supplies until installation is feasible.
