Deuel County commissioners approve 5% road pay increase, renew Wildlife Services plan and order right‑of‑way enforcement

Deuel County commissioners on July 7, 2026 approved several administrative actions affecting road operations, animal control services and right‑of‑way enforcement.
The board approved a five percent wage increase for all Road Department employees after Highway Superintendent Toney Krajewski and Assistant Highway Superintendent Kristian Fusilier reported that several pieces of equipment required repairs and that one department pickup awaits a transmission quote. Commissioner William Klingman moved to approve the five percent increase; Commissioner Jim Reichman seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The commissioners also renewed the Work/Financial Plan with USDA Wildlife Services, which provides Deuel County 250 hours of service to be used and paid for on an as‑needed basis during the period July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. USDA representatives Ryan Powers and Jeremy Kral reviewed the agreement; the board approved the renewal on a motion by Commissioner Klingman, seconded by Commissioner Reichman (unanimous vote).
County Attorney Jon Stellar raised safety and liability concerns about landowner encroachments within county road rights‑of‑way. Commissioners voted to enforce the county right‑of‑way policy by directing Stellar to send letters to landowners in violation and to allow seven days for removal of the hazard or encroachment; that motion passed unanimously.
In financial business, the board approved payroll and claims in the amount of $165,237.82 (payroll $49,062.46; claims $116,175.36). Commissioner Klingman moved and Commissioner Jean Timm seconded the motion; Commissioner Reichman recorded an abstention and the motion carried.
Public comment included a Veterans’ Service Officer announcement that a flag retirement ceremony will be held in September and outreach to area schools on flag etiquette, and a request from Susan Riley that the board consider reducing or waiving her impound storage fees. Treasurer Alicia Adams provided ARPA fund information in her absence; the minutes say the Big Springs Volunteer Fire Department will meet July 9 to discuss partnering with the county to pave a parking area along Highway 30. The meeting adjourned at 9:55 a.m.; the next regular meeting is July 21, 2026.
