The Public Safety Committee voted to forward three special-event permits to the Common Council: a two-day Summer Series that includes a volleyball tournament (June 20, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.) and a pickleball event (July 14, 7–9 p.m.); the Greene County Latino Health Fair (June 2, 3–7 p.m.) to be held in the Blackhawk Technical College parking lot; and a fundraiser organized by Cactus Company seeking to extend its sidewalk premise and close the outer lane on the south side of the square for the event.
Staff told the committee the Summer Series locations at Twining Park/Northeast Park have Park & Rec approval and that a special-event permit was required because of anticipated attendance; a committee member noted the permit alerts police to potential increased presence.
On the Latino Health Fair, staff said the uploaded application file looked like a blank, fillable form and that some permit fields (including dates and times) were not filled in the attachment. Staff offered to print a paper copy or email a corrected, filled version before the Council packet is finalized; because the event is scheduled for June 2 and the next Council meeting is June 1, the committee agreed to move the application forward to meet that timeline.
Administrator Windy described the Cactus Company request as a response to a recent fire: “Cactus Company is looking to host a fundraiser for Bartels following the fire,” and the application asks for a street closure (outer lane, south side of the square, approximately 2–6 p.m.) while allowing interior traffic to flow. The committee voted to forward the street-closure and premise-extension request to the Common Council.
Motions to forward each item passed at committee level; the clerk recorded the roll calls for each vote. Recorded committee votes for the Summer Series, Cactus fundraiser and Latino Health Fair were all recorded as ayes and the items were advanced to Council for final action.
In committee business members also requested that, once the investigation into the recent square fire is complete, Chief Rufe present findings and a summary packet to the committee as a learning exercise; members agreed the briefing would be helpful though they expected a delay while the investigation continues.
