The Town of Coats approved downtown schematic design drawings on Nov. 14 that show aesthetic streetscape improvements, a Public Square schematic and proposed architectural facades.
Town Manager Nick Holcomb said stakeholder meetings raised parking as a concern; the current plan would reduce existing parking from about 50 spaces to 46. He said the Dixon family would allow temporary public parking at the corner of Railroad and Main, and additional parallel parking might be possible after a planned waterline project.
Commissioner Jerry Beasley said he liked the concept but cautioned that the animated drawing overstated the scale of the Public Square. After discussion, the board directed staff to proceed with issuing RFPs to identify interested general contractors and approved the schematic drawings by unanimous vote.
No construction contract was awarded at the meeting; the action directed staff to seek proposals.
