The Montana Board of Regents met by conference call on April 2, 2025, and received an update on the Montana State University presidential search before entering an executive session to consider the Search Committee’s recommendation, Chair Todd Buchanan said. The meeting began at 2:02 p.m. and adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
Buchanan told the board the Presidential Search Advisory Committee, led by Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton Christian and assisted by consultants Greenwood Asher & Associates, conducted campus listening sessions to inform a position profile for the next MSU president. He said the committee selected two candidates from an applicant pool to visit campus and interview with various constituencies and that the committee carefully considered comments gathered during the process. Buchanan said he was "confident in the integrity of the process." No public comment was received on the item, he added.
After the update, the board convened an executive session. Buchanan stated that discussion of the Search Committee’s recommendation "related to matters of individual privacy" and that the demands of individual privacy outweighed the merits of public disclosure; he announced that the meeting would adjourn at the conclusion of the executive session. The board did not take any public votes or adopt a formal public action on the presidential search during the open portion of the call.
The meeting record lists Regents Todd Buchanan (chair), Joyce Dombrouski, Jeff Southworth, Dean Folkvord, Heather Hoyer and Raina Mortenson as present; Loren Bough and Superintendent Susie Hedalen were excused. Commissioner Clayton Christian and Governor Greg Gianforte (represented by Dylan Klapmeier) were noted as ex officio attendees. The board provided no additional timeline or next-step details during the public portions of the call.
The board adjourned at 3:30 p.m. following the executive session. No further public actions were recorded in the meeting minutes provided.
