Belgrade board adopts student cell‑phone policy after teachers report early gains

Melanie Young, a Belgrade High School teacher, told trustees the unified approach is helping teachers. "I will say it is working," she said, adding that teachers are seeing improved classroom focus and that the new process removes the burden on individual teachers to enforce inconsistent practices.
The policy formalizes guidance such as requiring phones to remain in backpacks or in classroom phone holders unless a teacher authorizes use for instruction. Building administrators will be responsible for implementation and for addressing instances in which the policy is not followed.
Trustees and staff said the policy is intended to support instruction and student wellbeing; the board approved the policy after a brief public comment period and discussion of enforcement and teacher expectations.
