Board weighs Montana Youth Challenge diploma and ceremony rules; policy to return next month

The Brockton School Board discussed whether participants in the Montana Youth Challenge (MYC) program should be allowed to participate in commencement and whether the district should issue a Brockton diploma to graduates of the program.
Board members reviewed sample policy language from other districts and identified three core questions: whether MYC participants may participate in graduation ceremonies, whether they may receive a Brockton diploma and whether they could have both privileges. The board reached consensus on conditions that would permit a diploma: completion of the MYC program of study, passing the HiSET prior to the class graduation date, waiver of the 20-credit district requirement where appropriate, being at least 16 years old and receiving an endorsement from the Brockton School Board.
Superintendent Josh Patterson and trustees signaled the district would draft a formal policy based on those consensus points and bring it back at the next board meeting for formal consideration and possible adoption. No final policy was adopted on Nov. 12.
