Valparaiso trustees approve finance report, table one minutes approval; library staffer resigns

The Village of Valparaiso Board of Trustees on June 9 approved the finance report and the May 21 minutes, tabled approval of the May 12 minutes because of a lack of quorum, and reviewed multiple line items in the finance report.

Trustee Turnwall moved to approve the May 21, 2026 minutes; Trustee Draper seconded and the motion carried with all trustees present voting yea. Trustee Turnwall then moved to approve the finance report; Draper seconded and the motion carried. Reported expenditures included a $56,884.00 insurance payment to Jones Bank, May payroll of $15,003.37, municipal supply and utilities payments, and smaller line items for supplies, software and testing.

The library report in the board packet summarized accreditation details and May usage: 53 adults, 74 youth, 185 in‑person checkouts and 84 online checkouts. The board learned that Denise Johnson has resigned from the library; the board said it had received inquiries about filling the vacancy. The board also noted that the Val Days dino dig was well attended and that the Val Days committee is investigating offsite storage for festival equipment.

On other routine items, the Parks board had no report; the Pet Committee displayed information about a potential dog park at Val Days; building permits requiring no board action were approved administratively and included in the packet; and the board agreed to handle nuisance/property code matters on a case-by-case basis and involve law enforcement or health‑department welfare checks when appropriate.

Chairperson Dan Homes moved to adjourn at 7:48 p.m.; the meeting ended the same evening.
