Valparaiso trustees hear water main break report; wage increase for licensed operator tabled

At the June 9 meeting, the Village of Valparaiso Board of Trustees received a report on a recent weekend water main break and discussed pay for a staff member who recently passed a state licensing exam.
Maintenance staff member Nick Sanders summarized the cause of the break, the repairs made and plans to train additional personnel on emergency protocols. Sanders thanked several residents and volunteers who assisted with the repair effort.
The board noted that staff member Jesse Alderson has passed the Grade IV water-operator exam; Trustee Turnwall highlighted that Alderson scored 96 percent on the test. Trustees said training additional people on emergency procedures is a priority to reduce single-point staffing risks.
Trustee Draper moved to table a proposed wage increase for Alderson until a fuller board is in attendance so the board could consider back pay for the interim period; Chairperson Dan Homes seconded. The motion carried with all trustees present voting yea. The wage proposal will return to the board at the next meeting when absent trustees are available.
The board closed discussion with no further immediate actions on staffing until the wage matter is revisited.
