Mesilla commission reviews draft sign code; considers A-frame signs, business directories and murals

The Mesilla Planning, Zoning and Historical Appropriateness Commission on April 7 reviewed proposed amendments to Mesilla Town Code 18.65 (Signs) during a work session ahead of a public hearing set for April 21, 2025.
Commissioners discussed how many signs should be permitted per business or structure and whether convenience stores should have tailored rules. The commission considered allowing A-frame (sandwich) signs and agreed to evaluate fees tied to signage. Secretary Miller suggested creating a business or outdoor directory sign to help customers find businesses within the area.
During public input, Catherine Walkinshaw emphasized coordination between the sign ordinance and a separate Arts and Culture draft ordinance, saying the arts-oriented code should explicitly include murals: "Arts and Culture draft ordinance needs to be consistent with sign ordinance to include, murals," she said.
No formal amendments or fee schedules were adopted at the April 7 session; commissioners scheduled a follow-up review and the public hearing on April 21. Staff will return with refined language and proposed fee changes for further consideration.
