Commissioner outlines legislative priorities as HB 2, HB 5 and HB 13 move to hearings

Commissioner of Higher Education Clayton T. Christian told the Board of Regents on Jan. 8 that the Montana University System is closely tracking legislation in the 69th Legislative Session that could affect the system. He thanked attendees and congratulated the MSU football team before providing a legislative update.
Deputy Director Hollenbaugh said the MUS’s top three priority bills — HB 2, HB 5 and HB 13 — have been scheduled for their initial hearings and reviewed HB 13 as the proposed State Pay Plan. He discussed recent Senate rule changes, provided upcoming hearing dates and said OCHE staff will provide legislative updates every Friday afternoon as the session proceeds.
The discussion focused on coordination with the Governor’s Office and the Legislature to address items that could affect campus operations and personnel pay. No formal action or vote on legislation was taken by the board at the meeting.
The board will continue to receive weekly legislative updates from OCHE staff during the session.
