Haverhill presented with final vulnerability assessment; DEP sign-off needed to pursue resiliency grants

Georgia Vince of consulting firm Tetra Tech presented the final vulnerability assessment for Haverhill and several nearby small municipalities at the council’s April 9 meeting. Vince said the assessment was produced under a state mandate and grant funding; the Town must wait for acceptance by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before applying for resiliency grants tied to the study.
Town Engineer Todd McLeod said he will review the study maps, study the identified critical areas and make recommendations on stormwater improvements if needed. McLeod noted the assessment uses a 500-year flood model rather than the town’s typical 100-year model, a methodological choice that will inform resilience planning and grant applications.
Town Administrator Tracey L. Stevens told the council that staff has observed no flooding during the recent heavy rains. The vulnerability assessment’s acceptance by DEP is a procedural prerequisite before the town may submit grant applications to fund resiliency projects identified in the study.
Next steps: pending DEP acceptance, staff and the engineering team will identify priority projects and pursue available grant opportunities to fund stormwater and resiliency improvements.
