Redington Beach residents ask to be included in SafeBuilt discussions; Redington Shores building department reports high permit activity

Public comment at the June 11 Redington Shores meeting included multiple appeals from individuals identifying as Redington Beach residents or officials who asked to be included in the town's Building Department discussions involving the contractor SafeBuilt.
Rich Cariello, who identified himself as a member of the Redington Beach Commission, said he wanted to be included in upcoming workshops and voiced concern about unilateral changes affecting both towns. Other residents, including a person identified only as "Vito" and Jennie Blackburn, echoed concerns about coordination and the contract with SafeBuilt.
Building Official Rob Peebles reported that the department had received 1,721 permit applications since October 2024 and maintained a 92% completion rate. Commissioners noted the Building Department management item will be discussed at an upcoming workshop and that the Tidal Basin contract for permit technicians was extended as a temporary measure while the department's needs are reviewed.
At one point in the meeting Jennie Blackburn clarified that the SafeBuilt contract is held by the Town of Redington Shores, not Redington Beach, noting confusion among commenters. The board did not take final action on interlocal coordination at the meeting but scheduled additional workshop discussion.
