Resident map prompts Redington Shores to seek ordinance for district boundary changes

At the April 29 workshop, resident and former Commissioner Christy Herig presented a proposed redistricting map and recommended adjusting district boundaries to achieve roughly equal numbers of voters. Herig told the board the current districting could permit two commissioners and the mayor to be elected from the Yacht and Tennis Club property because the property spans Districts 1 and 2 and the mayor is elected at-large.
Deputy Town Clerk and Management Analyst Rafael Soto reported staff analysis of permits and code-enforcement complaints, saying residential houses generated a higher volume of permits and complaints than condos or businesses, and Commissioner CJ Hoyt argued property type can influence district needs. Commissioners debated how to balance voter-equality goals with differing property types and needs and reached unanimous consensus for Town Attorney Nancy Meyer to draft an ordinance proposing the boundary changes.
Public comment included Jeannie Blackburn, who agreed with Mayor Tom Kapper that a vote should count the same regardless of property type. The draft ordinance is to be prepared for consideration at a future meeting.
