Town informed West Nassau County designated an RAO; FDEM approves hurricane shelter plans

Town Clerk Lisa Purvis told the council on March 5 that Nassau County Economic Development Executive Director Sherri Mitchell informed the town that West Nassau County has been designated a Rural Area of Opportunity (RAO) by the State of Florida.
Purvis said the Florida Division of Emergency Management has approved building plans for the town's Hurricane/Community Shelter project. She advised that, because of the RAO designation, the town should no longer need to secure interim lending when the shelter project enters construction, representing a potentially significant cost savings that had not been included in the town's current budget.
Separately, Land Use Administrator Lee Anne Wollitz reported that in-person CPR classes were successful, additional classes are planned, building permits will be relocated to Old Town Hall this week, and the Hilliard Volunteer Fire Department will begin renovations to upstairs living quarters at the fire station next week. Wollitz also provided an update on facilities planned for Westside Regional Park.
The HAC will meet on March 16 to finalize plans for the town's annual clean-up event.
