Gullah Geechee Family Day returns this weekend to the Penn Center campus on Saint Helena Island, organizers said on the county news bulletin.
The weekend opens with a reception at the York W. Bailey Museum hosted by Queen Quet, chiefess of the Gullah Geechee nation, and features artist Bruce Ingram and the Gullah Geechee Create Artist Collective. Attendees can expect language displays, music, traditional foods, arts and books for sale, guided tours of the museum and events connected to the Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.
Performances throughout the day will include the Wona Wamalayan African dance group and Beth Inabinet performing with the For the Funk of It band, with DJ Kwame Shay of All Mobile Productions providing music between sets. Registration is required; the Penn Center lists details and registration at penncenter.com/events.
