First reading: Holly Hill considers clarification to firefighters' pension medical supplement

According to staff, the ordinance makes explicit that the medical supplement tied to years of service is payable upon termination of employment (retirement) and not while an employee remains on the payroll.
Staff explained the draft was prepared by the pension attorney to clarify long-standing practice after a question arose from a member in the DROP program who believed the supplement could be paid while still employed. "When you leave employment, you're entitled to that," staff said; the ordinance is intended to make that clear for the future.
Because this was a first reading, commissioners did not adopt the ordinance tonight; it will return for additional consideration as required by ordinance procedure.
