Small Business Development Center outlines services, reports $70 million leveraged in region

Dave Shellmire, a regional representative of the Small Business Development Center hosted by the University of Texas at Tyler, presented to the commissioners on July 1 about the SBDC’s free services for entrepreneurs in six East Texas counties, including Harrison.
Shellmire said the SBDC has counseled nearly 1,400 clients since 2019, helped start almost 200 businesses, provided nearly 12,000 counseling hours and assisted clients in obtaining nearly $70 million in loans and equity capital. He described office availability in Marshall (staffed two days a week) and how the SBDC helps with business plans, loan packages, marketing, bookkeeping and other start‑up and growth needs at no cost to clients.
Shellmire thanked the court for hosting and asked commissioners to refer entrepreneurs to SBDC services; commissioners responded with appreciation for the center’s work. The presentation concluded with the court recessing for a short break before budget workshops.
