Commission weighs Neighborwoods renaming, native-plant protections and public education

At its March 2 meeting the Parks and Parkways Commission discussed several proposals to strengthen Neighborwoods habitat protections and public education.
Commissioners considered modifying the program name to explicitly reference wildlife areas, increasing the use of native species in plantings, and removing invasive plants from program sites as part of an effort to improve habitat value. Bonnie Abbey distributed handouts with draft bylaws and materials for commissioners to review and edit before a future discussion.
The commission discussed events and demonstrations to support the program: the annual caladium bulb giveaway was noted for Mother's Day weekend, and commissioners debated whether a tree-planting demonstration should be scheduled then or at another time. Chairman Shawn Potter asked members to start thinking about a fall educational program that could include another planting demo or activities tied to Neighborwoods.
Guest naturalist Alex Landry offered to lead a birding class aimed at helping residents set up their backyards for birds, an item the commission logged as a possible education offering.
