Raleigh County school board approves low bid paving contract for several schools after vendor vetting

He does work for the Department of Highways," Mike said, noting the company has "an impressive fleet of equipment." Mike added the district typically goes with the lowest responsible bidder after outreach to counties that have used a vendor.
A board member raised concern that Mister Asphalt's bid was much lower than other bidders. "I've never heard of him, and his bid is so much lower than everyone else's. It gives me a little concern," the member said. Mike replied that some firms submit high bids because they plan to subcontract, which can inflate prices, and that the district judged the scope to be patch work rather than a large paving project.
Gary, a district staff member responsible for site details, answered questions about work at Crescent, saying crews would stop roughly a month and a half from the building while roof drains were addressed. He said staff planned to add parking: "we'll have room for vehicles... If everything goes well, we'll have 8 additional spots." The board chair listed the sites covered by the package: the central office, Bradley Elementary, Daniels, Liberty, Shady and Woodrow High Schools.
The board did not provide a detailed breakdown of the contract price in the session; staff described the scope as patch work and noted an amount of about $270,000 was being discussed in relation to similar patch work expenses. The contract award now allows staff to schedule the work and finalize contracting details.
The board moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
