Rothbury bans proposed Valley City Metals road through village hall park and approves DNR grant reallocation

The Rothbury Village Council voted to prohibit construction of a road tied to a Valley City Metals project that would cross the village hall park, parking lot and bike trail, citing potential conflicts with future park improvements and trail access.
The motion was made by Denise Kurdziel and seconded by Mike Harris; the measure passed 6 ayes to 1 nay (Dylan Zuniga). Council members raised concerns that a privately built road through park property and across the bike trail would interfere with planned improvements and public access.
Collin Mann of engineering firm Prein & Newhof told the council about complications with DNR grant funding and a Consumers Power easement that crosses the ballfield. Mann presented three options to reallocate the DNR funds within the DNR’s allowable scope so the grant process could continue. After discussion, Autum Drake moved to proceed with option 3; the motion was seconded by Mike Harris and passed 7–0. Mann will follow up with the DNR on next steps.
The council’s actions preserve the village hall park and bike-trail access from the specific road proposal tied to Valley City Metals and advance a path for resolving the grant/easement issue so ballfield improvements may proceed.
