Board discusses storm surge protection and asks staff to support resilience planning

River Ridge staff and Pelican Sound representatives briefed the Board on resilience planning to address increasing storm surge impacts. Long presented a hypothetical topographic analysis in which a 10- to 12-foot storm surge could have inundated an estimated 45%–55% of the community during a modeled event, emphasizing the need for long-range planning and multi-agency coordination. The Board expressed support; Mr. Long and newly appointed Mr. Merrill agreed to assist with outreach and planning and Mr. Krebs was authorized to provide engineering support.
Counsel noted that some measures would require external funding or approvals (for example, Army Corps of Engineers ideas presented in nearby Collier County), so any program would likely take many years and involve State, County and village-level coordination.
