Fairbanks Local board approves athletic participation fee increase

The Fairbanks Local Board of Education approved an increase in athletic participation fees, citing rising operational costs for officials, equipment and program operations.

Chair introduced the motion to raise high-school participation fees for grades 9through 12 to $75 per sport for the first two sports and to raise middle-school (grades 7and 8) fees to $40 per sport for the first two sports; the third sport fee will be waived. "We've been discussing this in the finance committee for the last couple of years," the treasurer (Speaker 2) said, adding that the cost of running the department has increased and some fees had not been raised for many years.

The superintendent said the district will investigate sponsorships and a hardship application so students will not be excluded from participating because of fee inability: "If a student can't pay, there would be an application they can complete that some sponsorship money could be used to pay their fee," she said.
