The superintendent reported the districts key back-to-school dates and progress on summer facilities work, saying families and staff should expect several changes before classes resume.
The superintendent told the board the fall athletic parent meeting and "meet the team" night will be held August 11 at 6:30 p.m., convocation for district staff is scheduled for August 17 at 8:30 a.m. in the high school gym, the first day for grades 1through 12 will be August 19, and preschool and kindergarten begin August 24. "Principals will be pushing that information out in early August," the superintendent said.
Why it matters: the timeline affects staffing, building access and traffic plans for families. The superintendent said individual school buildings will publish open-house dates, meet-the-principal events and orientation schedules so families can plan for the first weeks of school.
Facilities and timeline: the superintendent described the districts ongoing master facilities plan, reporting that classroom HVAC units have been installed at the middle school and the district expects to begin conditioning the building with inspections over the next several days. "Alfred is on target to complete the HVAC project by July 30," the superintendent said. She added that roughly 80% of ceiling tiles and new classroom lighting are installed.
On the music-room renovation, she said the ceiling grid and lighting are being installed now and that work to convert office space into instructional area should be mostly complete in early August; acoustical tiles and some casework are expected to arrive after the school year starts. Regarding the campus access road, she said asphalt will be laid next week and that she was meeting with Norman Miller about signage; the anticipated completion date, weather permitting, is August 10.
Traffic and athletics: the superintendent said the student drop-off and bus loops will reverse: parents will use the Northern Way entrance and buses will use the Southern Way entrance; the change will be communicated to families in August. She also reported that the baseball field will be regraded and the district is ordering astroturf for the infield.
Board response and next steps: board members praised the visible progress on renovations and thanked custodial and maintenance staff. The superintendent said principals and building staff will follow up with detailed communications to families in early August and that construction sequencing is intended to allow classrooms to be ready before staff return.
The superintendents report concluded with the chair moving on to the treasurers report.
