Pewaukee athletic, activities participation dips while teams post state-level successes
Summary
The district reported declines in single-activity participation and overall engagement this year but highlighted strong competitive achievements and higher average GPAs among participating students. The athletics director also reported injury and concussion tallies and said Title IX compliance is maintained.
Jeff, the district’s athletic director, presented the athletics and activities report to the board on July 20, outlining participation, academic outcomes and program highlights.
Jeff said the high school offered 29 clubs and organizations with 1,266 reported participant instances and 446 individual students (52.4% of the student body) participating in at least one club — a 4 percentage-point decline from the prior year. Combined athletics and activities involvement totaled 689 individual students (81% of the student body), down from 93% the year before. Athletic participation alone fell from 66% to 63% of students.
Jeff noted positive academic correlations: students who participated in athletics-only averaged a 3.52 GPA, activities-only averaged 3.53, students in both averaged 3.53, and students not participating in any activity averaged 3.35. He emphasized the district’s focus on offering opportunities while acknowledging that the intensity and year-round demands of some sports make multi-sport participation harder than in prior years.
The presentation also highlighted competitive success: multiple conference titles, regional and sectional qualifiers, and individual students earning exemplary and state-honors recognitions. Jeff noted that over the past seven years the district had 20 teams qualify for state tournaments across nine different programs.
On safety and oversight, Jeff reported 151 total injuries this year (down 40 from the prior year) and 53 total concussions; excluding visiting-team incidents (14), the district’s concussion count was 39, one higher than the previous year. Jeff said 13 athletic code violations occurred in the year (5 related to suspensions, 5 from off-campus incidents, and 3 tied to the random drug-testing policy); no changes to the code were proposed.
Board members asked questions about enrollment trends, sport-specific participation, and how academic pressures and AP coursework may affect students’ ability to engage in multiple activities. Jeff said the district will analyze the decline in multi-activity participation and work to ensure opportunities remain available to students.
The board thanked Jeff and accepted the report.
