Clinton educators report strong start for after-school program and student-success team

Sarah O'Neil, co-director of the after-school program at Whitney School, told trustees that Session 1 of the after-school program (ASB) has served ELP through third grade with homework help, STEM stations, arts and crafts, and clubs such as bike club and yearbook; she said Session 2 starts Nov. 3 and will include textiles/sewing and jewelry workshops. "We have had a total of 89 kids registered this year for ASB," S4 said.
Teacher and union president Jenny Hartwick described the school’s Student Success Team (SST), a weekly meeting of staff to triage behavioral and academic "red flags" and propose tiered interventions, and said the practice is catching many issues early in the year. Hartwick said the SST has met with nearly every teacher and cited positive feedback from new teachers who said they had not seen similar supports at other schools.
Board members praised classroom visitation and mentoring efforts. Trustees and staff discussed mentor-mentee arrangements for first-year teachers and noted that having administrators regularly in classrooms helps make evaluations and feedback more useful and less stressful for new teachers. The principal (S6) and other speakers reported fewer office referrals since the principal began more frequent classroom visits.
What happens next: Staff said the SST will continue weekly meetings and the after-school program will proceed with Session 2 programming; the board thanked staff and volunteers for the programs and the district will update families through standard communications.
