The Clinton School Board received an employee health-insurance proposal that staff said arrived that afternoon and showed "better than expected" initial numbers, staff member Heather told the board.
Board members said they want teachers and staff involved in assessing the options. Heather said the vendor extended its deadline from Nov. 30 to Dec. 19 and that the district plans to invite teachers to meet the week before Thanksgiving so they can review the proposal; the board aims to take a formal recommendation up at its December meeting.
Why it matters: the proposal would shape the district's five-year commitment on health benefits and affect employee premium contributions and budgeting. Board members asked whether coverage under the new proposal is comparable to the district's current plan and whether part-time employees are eligible; staff said initial reviews indicate comparable coverage and that part-time employees are not eligible under the district plan. A board member said employees currently contribute about $110 for a high-deductible plan.
Heather said staff compared multiple vendor plans and asked for additional options tailored to the district. She offered to prepare a packet of plan details and rates for board members to review before the next meeting. "We did get our proposal this afternoon," Heather said, "and, at first look, the numbers, they're better than expected." She also noted the district had shopped plans in prior years and that last year’s renewal resulted in about a 5% increase.
The board asked staff to circulate the full rates and plan comparisons so members can review them in advance. The chair requested paperwork be distributed by the end of the year so it can be compiled for consideration at the December meeting.
Next steps: staff will prepare and distribute a packet with plan options and detailed rates; the board expects to revisit the proposal and consider a recommendation at its December meeting.
