The Delano City Council voted May 19 to approve a proposed play equipment project for Sunset Community Park designed with Landscape Structures. The project includes a large ADA-accessible play structure (described by staff as among the tallest available nationally), a swing set and a smaller donated play structure for children ages two to five.
City Engineer Shawn Louwagie presented options developed with Landscape Structures and said the estimated project cost is $930,349, an increase from the 2026 project funding budget of $750,000. To cover the shortfall staff proposed increasing the park dedication contribution by $50,000, allocating $25,000 from the Capital Improvement Fund and using $100,000 from Landscape/EDA land transaction funds. Councilmember Becky Schaust said the inclusion of a dedicated younger-children play area addressed earlier concerns from the Park and Recreation Committee about the height and design catering primarily to older children.
On a motion by Becky Schaust, seconded by Todd Belz, the council approved the play equipment proposal for Sunset Community Park; motion carried. Staff estimated work would be completed in late summer or early fall. The minutes do not include a construction contract amount or schedule beyond the estimated completion window.
