Delano council approves short-term loan for Light the Night storage

Mayor Holly Schrupp and the Delano City Council voted May 19 to provide a short-term loan to Delano Light the Night to purchase an additional storage container and help with materials storage for the event.
Dorothy Zitzloff and Brad Zitzloff, representing Delano Light the Night, told the council they plan to condense the attraction into a month-long celebration beginning the Friday after Thanksgiving and running for five weekends. They said setup typically requires roughly 1,000 volunteer hours and that they expect approximately 8,000–10,000 vehicles to visit the display. The Zitzloffs requested the City loan funds for about six months with repayment as soon as possible.
Mayor Schrupp asked about setup timing and the Zitzloffs said preparations start around the second week of October, with volunteers needed for wrapping garland, testing lights and hanging decorations. Councilmember Becky Schaust noted the operational benefit of a condensed schedule.
On a motion by Mayor Schrupp, seconded by Councilmember Todd Belz, the council approved the loan to assist with the purchase of the storage container; the motion carried.
The city did not specify the loan amount in the meeting record. The Zitzloffs said they have two shipping containers and substantial materials already in storage and that an additional container and volunteer support are needed to sustain and grow the event.
