Budget committee approves extra funding for American Legion flags and parade

The Wolfeboro Budget Committee voted to increase a line item to restore funding requested by American Legion Post 18, the committee learned at its Dec. 9 meeting at the Wilco Public Library.
Representatives from the American Legion presented a cover letter and archival history of the organization and asked the committee to restore their 2024 funding level. "We are currently resubmitting a request for $11,236," the American Legion representative said, explaining the money would pay for flags at veterans' gravesites, hardware repairs and expenses for the town parade.
Committee members and staff said the proposed budget on the table already included some funding for the request. The committee member who moved the change proposed increasing the identified line by $2,546 to bring the total to $11,236; another member seconded the motion. After brief discussion about the uses — including twice-yearly placement of flags with help from local Cub and Boy Scouts and a parade the group has run for more than a century — the committee took a roll-call vote and approved the increase.
Jim Shannon, the town finance officer, told the committee the proposed budget had $8,690 in that agency's line and that members were seeking the higher $11,236 level for 2026. "The proposed budget you have in front of you ... is $8,690 and they are looking for $11,236," Shannon said during the presentation.
The committee did not specify a separate funding source for the increase beyond the general operating budget; members discussed the request as a small but meaningful restoration to preserve the town's veterans' flags and long-standing parade tradition. The vote was recorded by roll call as part of the meeting minutes.
The committee then moved on to a full review of estimated revenues and the default budget, saying staff would note the committee's action in the updated materials they will distribute before the public hearing and deliberative session.
