USD 452 board approves up to $300,000 for playground project; funds powerlifting and KASB membership

The Stanton County Unified School District No. 452 Board of Education on April 16 approved multiple spending items, most notably authorizing up to $300,000 for playground equipment and site surfacing if external grants are not obtained.
Superintendent Trenton Horn described several summer facility needs, including new kitchen dishwashers and outstanding electrical work, and asked the board to set a maximum local contribution for playground improvements. Board member Bret Kendrick moved to authorize spending up to $300,000 for equipment and plot surfacing; Vice President Bobbie Ehrlich seconded and the motion carried 7-0.
At the same meeting Coach Josh Allen asked the board to help offset high entry and travel costs for powerlifting competitions, requesting $1,500 to help pay trip expenses and ongoing coverage of the district’s one annual state meet because Kansas State High School Activities Association does not recognize powerlifting as a KSHSAA event. Bret Kendrick moved to approve $1,500 for powerlifting expenses and to fund the one-time state meet annually; Bobbie Ehrlich seconded and the motion carried 7-0.
Superintendent Horn also presented the district’s annual Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) package: a $2,750 legal assistant contract and a $7,537.95 annual membership. Chantry moved to approve both the membership and the legal assistant contract for the 2025–2026 school year; Val seconded and the motion carried 7-0.
The board approved several other routine financial items on the consent agenda earlier in the meeting, including payment of claims and minutes from the March 12 regular meeting.
The board instructed administration to solicit multiple bids for needed intercom repairs after members noted that the current system is not audible in some parts of the building. The district will pursue grant funding for the playground before applying the board-authorized local amount.
