Stanton County principals demo phone pouches, discuss vape-detection wand and prompt policy review

At the Stanton County USD 452 board meeting on March 12, elementary and junior/senior high principals described steps the district is taking to reduce in-school cellphone and vaping disruptions.
Elementary Principal Andrea Jones reported strong attendance at parent-teacher conferences and described upcoming MTSS math-related outreach. Junior/senior high Principal Leah Crane demonstrated Yondr phone packets the school plans to use to secure student phones; she said students who tear a packet to retrieve a phone will face a $30 charge.
Crane also said the school is trialing a loaner vape-detection wand from the Stanton County Sheriff’s Office to detect vaping on students. The board discussed tightening disciplinary measures to make vaping less attractive and the need for an official policy and device purchase. Superintendent Trenton Horn was directed to consult KASB about what punishments the district may implement.
Board members noted limitations on school search authority and emphasized that incidents occurring off school property (for example, a previously referenced incident at Battin Park) are outside the district’s jurisdiction. The board did not take a formal vote on purchasing equipment at the meeting; work to draft a policy and confirm allowable disciplinary actions was assigned to district leadership.
