Steve Karlin, a Kansas Association of School Boards representative, told the Stanton County Unified School District No. 452 Board of Education on May 8 that an online component of the district’s superintendent-search survey collected 138 responses in about a day and a half. Karlin said the turnout was strong given the short timeline and outlined next steps and proposed dates for the search process.
The presentation summarized multiple survey strands the district used — committee, administration, student and staff surveys — and emphasized that the online feedback provided additional community data for the board to consider in selecting a superintendent.
During board discussion, member Bobbie Ehrlich said all surveys should be provided in Spanish to reach families who speak Spanish at home. Karlin responded that the district’s accelerated schedule — completed in roughly three weeks rather than the 10–12 weeks that is typical for a search process — made producing translated materials infeasible within the current timeline.
At the start of the meeting, President Lettie Nickell opened the session at 7:00 p.m. and the board unanimously approved the meeting agenda after a motion by Paige German and a second by Val Zumudio (6-0). The meeting concluded with the signatures of President Nickell and Board Clerk Melissa Wilson.
The board did not record public comments at this special meeting and did not take other formal actions on the superintendent search beyond receiving the survey report and discussing next steps. The board may schedule further meetings or steps as part of the search timetable Karlin outlined.
