The Historic Landmarks Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness on Feb. 9 for exterior alterations and a detached garage at 203 South Church Street.
Staff member Preston Marple described the property as a contributing early-20th-century bungalow in the downtown historic district and said the proposed addition and new garage meet the city’s setback and height requirements. "All our setback requirements are met," Preston Marple said, and recommended approval.
Applicant Mary Catherine Robinson told the commission the work is intended to make the house usable long term for aging-in-place and that exterior colors would match the existing home. "...really just looking to make the house more long term for our aging needs," Mary Catherine Robinson said, describing accessibility improvements and material samples she brought to the meeting.
Commission members discussed siding and window options and whether the proposed polyash siding offers durability advantages over fiber cement. One commissioner noted polyash is described in the record as a fly-ash/resin composite that can be easier to handle than fiber cement but said she was unsure about its fire performance. Commissioners agreed the proposed materials and roof form would be compatible with the bungalow character and moved to approve the staff-recommended design.
A committee member moved to approve the COA as recommended by staff; the motion passed with no recorded opposition. The applicant was told to coordinate final details with staff before work begins.
