The city manager presented an administrative report covering community programming, infrastructure work and development activity.
Upcoming public events include an author talk at the library on April 15, a "scam jam" and document-shredding event April 16, and a Roanoke Rapids Police Department community meeting at Kirkwood on April 27. Staff encouraged resident participation in senior programming and noted that summer youth camps will begin June 22.
On infrastructure and safety, the manager said the Aquatic Center will replace equalizer/anti-entrapment drain covers to comply with federal pool-safety standards, annual hydrant flushing will take place in April–May (residents advised to run taps if water is discolored), and the fire department completed inspections of roughly 15,000 linear feet of fire hose and continues to offer CPR training. The city also provided mutual-aid assistance to the town of Weldon for a recent fire call and said the statewide burn ban remains in effect due to dry conditions.
On development, planning staff are reviewing drawings for a new Home2Suites on the former Quality Inn site; the project was described as 99 rooms across five stories. The manager said city staff met with Congressman Don Davis’ office on a funding proposal to address structurally compromised buildings along the avenue and that hazard mitigation solutions will require multiple funding sources; staff anticipate contractor-award recommendations for the city’s CDBG housing program and plan to present those recommendations at the next council meeting on April 21, with a public hearing on community needs to follow.
The manager also noted administrative items: the finance department is soliciting proposals for the annual financial audit after the current auditor announced retirement and the city is progressing on FY27 budget planning and fee-schedule updates.
Council members asked about audit proposals; staff said none had been received formally yet. Staff also reminded residents about leaf/yard-trimmings rules (bagged/boxed now that leaf-vac season ended) and employee-safety training offered by a local business.
The report covered a breadth of routine administrative and community items; follow-up actions include presenting CDBG contractor recommendations at the next meeting and notifying the League of Municipalities about the city voting delegate.
