Roanoke Rapids council approves reappointment and three advisory appointments, authorizes $3,799 SHIP grant for Senior Center
Summary

The Roanoke Rapids City Council voted to reappoint Julia Anne Fitts to the Roanoke Canal Commission by waiving the city’s two-term limit, and approved three advisory committee appointments made by earlier ballot vote.
The clerk told the council that Julia Anne Fitts had reached the maximum of two consecutive terms but that a prior ballot vote recommended a waiver and unanimous reappointment. The council made and approved the motion to waive policy and reappoint Fitts.
The clerk also reported unanimous ballot recommendations for two other volunteers: Gary Arnett to the Senior Center Advisory Committee (term through August 2028) and Robert Creekmore Phillips to the Library Advisory Committee (term through May 2028). Council moved and approved both appointments by voice vote.
Separately, council adopted Ordinance 2026.07 to accept SHIP grant funds of $3,799 for the Senior Center after a staff representative reported receipt of the grant. The ordinance was approved by motion, second and voice vote.
The appointments fill current vacancies on advisory bodies and the SHIP funds will be used for Senior Center programming as described in the council packet.
