The Sayreville Borough Council adopted amendments to the 2026 municipal budget and then voted to adopt the final 2026 municipal budget during the July meeting.
Council members said repeated negotiations and cuts reduced an initially proposed 25¢ tax increase to about 13¢; Councilwoman (speaker 13) and others emphasized that the largest single driver was a roughly $3.2 million increase in employer medical‑benefit costs. Council president (speaker 7) thanked municipal staff and department directors for efforts to reduce discretionary spending while acknowledging that fixed costs have risen.
The public portion of the budget hearing produced no substantive public objections on the record and the council proceeded to roll‑call votes to close the public hearing, adopt the budget amendment and then adopt the final budget. Several council members spoke at length about process improvements and requested earlier involvement of department directors in future budget cycles to increase transparency.
The council also approved related budget housekeeping items and authorized certified copies of the amended budget be filed with the Division of Local Government Services for certification. The minutes and formal resolution numbers will appear in the borough’s posted meeting records.
