Silver Creek Township approves up to $15,000 for tree trimming; Baker Ave culvert motion fails

Chairman Mike Helman and the Silver Creek Township Board of Supervisors approved funding for tree trimming at their Oct. 1 meeting after reviewing an estimate from Carr's Tree Service.
Carr's Tree Service provided a $12,000 estimate for the work; Chairman Mike Helman moved to approve up to $15,000 for tree trimming, a motion seconded by Vice Chairman Brandon Geyen and carried 4-0. The board instructed staff to proceed with contracting the work within the approved authorization.
The board also debated a proposed lowering of a culvert on Baker Avenue. Supervisor Ryan Nelson moved to finish the culvert-lowering project as needed and to address liability concerns with the township attorney; Chairman Helman seconded. The motion failed on a 2-2 vote after members raised concerns that altering the culvert could change water flow and create liability exposure.
Board members tabled replacement of tires for the township Chevrolet 1500 to allow consideration of replacing the vehicle instead. The board noted a hydraulic study is included in the 2025 budget and directed staff to gather estimates for that study, which the board said would be valid for about five years.
The maintenance items were concluded with directions for follow-up: proceed with the tree work under the approved authorization, gather hydraulic-study estimates, and return vehicle-replacement or tire recommendations to a future agenda.
