The Chair opened discussion on pedestrian safety near the Boys & Girls Club in Red Lodge and asked staff to explore additional signage and flashing crosswalk devices after residents reported motorists speeding down nearby Hauser Avenue.
The issue surfaced when a resident described seeing a flashing sign in one location and said it was effective: "we love that it is slowing down traffic around the playground," the resident said. Members agreed brighter, more visible signs and a couple of solar flashing devices would likely draw drivers' attention where children are present.
Council members and staff discussed options for placement and wording, including more colorful markers that explicitly say "Boys and Girls Club" and relocating an existing sign on Everett Road that council members said was not near child activity. The Chair said she would forward prior correspondence on signage and asked staff to check what existing inventory the city has and whether the Boys & Girls Club could help with a community-funded sign project.
Members noted cost and practicality: several said solar flashing signs are not expensive and that the town already owns some pedestrian signage. One committee member urged immediate action, saying, "Let's do it." Staff agreed to follow up and to order standard children's safety signs if appropriate.
The meeting left the matter to staff for follow-up and potential purchase; council members suggested bringing any procurement or placement recommendations back for a future meeting.
